    Insight from AE Business Advisors

    How does it work?

Launched in 2013, the Malta Global Residence Programme offers a cost-effective route to optimise your personal tax while enjoying residence in one of Europe’s most secure and well-connected jurisdictions.

Beneficiaries of the GRP pay a fixed tax rate of 15% on all foreign income remitted to Malta, with low application thresholds and straightforward requirements. The programme allows you to live, work and conduct business in Malta, and travel within the Schengen Area for up to 90 days in every 180-day period.

Applicants can include immediate family members and long-term household staff in one application. To qualify, you must have a stable income, valid health insurance, a clean criminal record, and either purchase or rent a qualifying property in Malta or Gozo.

Residence permits are typically issued within 3–4 months and are initially valid for one year, renewable every two years. To retain status, you must maintain your property investment, remain tax-compliant, and not reside in another jurisdiction for more than 183 days per year.
