Malta’s Global Residence Programme

Malta, with its stunning Mediterranean setting, excellent quality of life, and access to the Schengen Area, offers an attractive opportunity for Non-EU nationals seeking a new home. The Global Residence Programme (GRP), launched in 2013, provides a cost-effective way to gain residency rights while optimising personal tax obligations.

What is the Global Residence Programme (GRP)?

The GRP is tailored for individuals and families who wish to reside in Malta and benefit from a favourable tax rate of 15% on foreign income brought into the country. Beyond tax advantages, the programme allows permit holders to live in Malta and travel visa-free within Schengen countries for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

Applicants can include all family members and even partners and household staff in their application, making the GRP an ideal option for those looking to relocate with loved ones.

Eligibility and Requirements

To qualify for the GRP, applicants must meet several key criteria:

  • Stable Income: Proof of financial stability is required.
  • Health Insurance: Comprehensive health insurance covering Malta and the EU is mandatory.
  • Qualifying Residence: Applicants must secure a property in Malta, whether through purchase or rental, that meets the programme’s requirements.
  • Background Checks: A thorough vetting process ensures all applicants meet the necessary standards.

Additionally, government fees and annual taxes apply. Applicants must maintain their tax obligations, maintain health insurance, and property investment, spending no more than 183 days annually outside of Malta.

Permit Details

Once approved, residence permits are typically issued within 3–4 months. The initial permit is valid for one year and can be renewed every two years, subject to meeting all conditions.

Why Choose Malta?

Malta’s location, robust infrastructure, and access to the Schengen Area make it an ideal base for work, family, and leisure. Coupled with its rich cultural heritage and favourable tax regime, it’s no surprise the GRP is a popular choice among Non-EU nationals.
