Discover How to Boost Your Company’s Finances and Sustainability with Malta’s Green Mobility Scheme

30 May 2024

Looking to go green? Malta Enterprise’s Green Mobility Scheme presents a significant opportunity for businesses to embrace sustainable transportation and reduce their environmental impact, all while benefiting from financial incentives. Read on to discover how the Green Mobility Scheme can empower your company to navigate a greener future.

Enhancing Environmental Impact and Operational Efficiency

The Green Mobility Scheme focuses on two key pillars designed to drive your company towards a more sustainable future:

Charging Infrastructure Investment:

The scheme provides financial support for acquiring, installing, upgrading, or expanding charging stations for your commercial Electronic Vehicle (EV) fleet. The scheme covers costs associated with charging functionalities and essential technical equipment, facilitating a seamless transition to a sustainable transportation model.

Clean/Zero-Emission Vehicle Leasing:

The program incentivises businesses to lease clean vehicles (partially powered by electricity or hydrogen) or zero-emission EVs for a period of 12 to 36 months. This allows companies to explore the benefits of electric vehicles without a significant initial investment, fostering a more environmentally conscious approach to transportation.

Tangible Financial Benefits

The Green Mobility Scheme provides substantial financial advantages through a variety of mechanisms.

Qualified businesses can receive grants covering the full interest cost for the first three years on loans used to finance charging infrastructure investments, supported by approved institutions like the Malta Development Bank. This significantly reduces the financial burden associated with establishing the necessary charging infrastructure. Companies may also qualify for tax credits ranging from 20% to 55% of eligible costs, depending on company size and location. These tax credits further incentivise investment in EVs and charging infrastructure.

Businesses that lease clean or zero-emission vehicles can benefit from tax credits that offset a portion of the additional leasing cost compared to a conventional vehicle. The credit percentage varies based on company size and ranges from 20% to 60%, making clean transportation a more cost-effective option.

To be eligible for the Green Mobility Scheme, a company must meet the following criteria:

  • Registration with the Malta Business Registry
  • Employment of at least 5 full-time employees
  • Good standing with Income Tax, VAT and Social Security payments
  • Company must not be considered an ”Undertaking in Difficulty
  • Possession of suitable commercial premises for charging EVs (if applying for charging infrastructure support)
